Flag of the White House at half mast, lighting of the Eiffel Tower off; Monuments pay homage to the Queen after her death

President Joe Biden ordered the White House flags to be flown at half-mast following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-serving monarch, who died at 96.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) also ordered flags at the United States Capitol to be flown at half-mast to honor the monarch.

“Speaker Pelosi has ordered that the flags in the United States Capitol be lowered due to the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,” Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill said. wrote on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo ordered the lighting of the Eiffel Tower to be turned off on Thursday evening in honor of the Queen.

“Tonight, the lights of the Eiffel Tower will be turned off in tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,” Hidalgo said.

In the UK, all official flags had to be flown at half-mast until after the Queen’s funeral.

“Following the death of Her Majesty The Queen, all official flags, including the Union Flag, are to be flown at half-mast as soon as possible today until 8.00am the day after the Queen’s State Funeral. Flags may be flown overnight during this period, but must remain at half mast,” according to a press release issued by the UK government.
