A section of the original Eiffel Tower staircase is on display at Expo 2020 Dubai’s Al Forsan Park.
The segment was used to climb to the top of the famous French monument when it opened for the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1889.
Four years later, the stairs were replaced with an elevator, but now Expo visitors can have the chance to step back in history and climb part of the original staircase.
“I’m so happy and honored to have a piece of the Eiffel Tower right next to the Al Wasl dome – it’s very symbolic of the journey, discovery, innovation and universal values that are at stake today. today,” said Nathalie Kennedy, Consul General of France in Dubai.
Ahmed Al Khatib, director of development and delivery at Expo 2020 Dubai, said that when you climb those stairs of the Eiffel Tower and take a selfie, the backdrop is Al Wasl Plaza.
“[This is] our very own Eiffel Tower, which will be a constant reminder of Expo 2020,” Mr. Al Khatib said.
“If you talk about sustainability, it’s a piece of history that’s now also a work of art. And it’s traveled from Paris to so many places, and is now here in Dubai. It’s the perfect representation of the values of all universal exhibitions.
The staircase was brought to Expo 2020 Dubai by Janat Paris, a tea house which served drinks at the opening of the Eiffel Tower, while the project is dedicated to famous Emirati author Mohammed Al Gurg, who died in 2020.
“It’s a photo of my father on the Eiffel Tower with his best friend in 1964. My father loves France,” said Dr Tariq Al Gurg, referring to a photograph exhibited at the inauguration.
“He bought a place there in the 1980s, that’s where he started, sitting on the balcony working on his poetry and writing.”
When it was built, the Eiffel Tower, 324 meters high, was the tallest building in the world.
Expo 2020 Dubai continues until the end of March.
