PARIS — The Eiffel Tower rose six meters (nearly 20 feet) on Tuesday after engineers hoisted a new communications antenna to the top of France’s most iconic monument.
From the Trocadéro esplanade, tourists watched the new digital radio antenna being airlifted. With the new antenna, the Eiffel Tower went from 324 meters (1,063 feet) high to 330 meters (1,083 feet).
Eiffel Tower society president Jean-Francois Martins told The Associated Press that scientific progress is integral to the Iron Lady’s 133-year history.
“It’s a historic moment this morning, because the Eiffel Tower is going up, which is not that common,” he said.
“From the invention of radio in the early 20th century to today, decades after decades, the Eiffel Tower has been a partner for all radio technology,” Martins said.
The Eiffel Tower was 312 meters high when it was inaugurated on March 31, 1889.
